Barbados does not have any car rental agents affiliated with major international chains. Instead, there are scores of independent car rental companies. You simply call to book a car and someone will come by the hotel to pick you up.

While most car rental companies don’t have booths at the airport there are a number of local agencies that will pick you up there.

As in Ireland, driving is on the left. Cars and mini-mokes are easy to hire. A map is essential if exploring by car. The locals are helpful with directions and all roads eventually lead back to Bridgetown!

The visitor driving permit (essential when hiring a car) costs BBD$10 and is available at any police station, airport or through the car rental company on production of a current driving licence.

Taxis have a ‘Z’ on the licence plate and usually a ‘taxi’ sign on top. They’re easy to find and often wait at the side of the road in popular tourist areas. Although fares are fixed by the government, most taxis are not metered so you should agree a fare before you set off.
